Give the Mower a Winter Off (and Get Your Garage Back)

Give the Mower a Winter Off (and Get Your Garage Back)

The last grass cut of the year is done, the plant pots are back from wherever they spent the summer, and the garden is officially clocking off until spring. The trouble is, all that kit still has to go somewhere. And somehow, that somewhere is always the garage.

It does not have to be. If your garage spends winter as a shed for things that should be in an actual shed, a storage container is the straightforward fix. Move the garden department out, and suddenly you have a garage that fits a car again.

What actually accumulates over a gardening season

It creeps up on you. The mower is obvious, but then there is the strimmer, the leaf blower, the hedge trimmer, a rake or three, a stack of terracotta pots in various sizes, seed trays, bags of compost that will not survive a wet winter stacked against a damp wall, the pressure washer, and the hosepipe wound around something optimistically. By October the garage has become a garden centre with a car park problem.

The garden tools you reach for between November and March are probably a spade and some wellies. Everything else can sit in a container and wait.

Why a container works well for this kind of storage

Garden equipment is bulky, awkward shaped, and not particularly fragile. A drive-up storage container suits it perfectly. You can push the mower straight in, stack pots without worrying, and pile in the seasonal gear without needing to carry anything up a lift or down a corridor. When April arrives and the grass starts growing again, you drive up, open the door, and take back what you need.

Containers also keep the damp out, which matters more than people expect. Mowers left in a leaky garage over winter can seize, rust, or develop fuel problems. A weathertight container in a decent storage facility is often drier than the average Devon garage.

How much space do you actually need

For most households clearing out the seasonal garden kit, a compact unit does the job. SOS Storage at Kingskerswell has 5ft containers from £96 a month, which is enough for the core garden department without paying for space you do not need. If you have a ride-on mower or an especially ambitious collection of pots and planters, it is worth thinking bigger, but a standard garden clear-out fits a smaller unit comfortably.

The Kingskerswell site has drive-up access every day, so there is no booking a slot or waiting for someone to unlock anything. You turn up when it suits you, which is exactly how storage should work.

What you get back in return

Mainly: a garage you can use. Being able to park your car inside over winter is genuinely useful in South Devon, where the weather between November and March can be committed. No frost on the windscreen, no wet seats when you forgot to close a window, no scraping ice off at 7am. That alone is worth a few pounds a month to a lot of people.

Beyond the car, a cleared garage is just a better space. You might use it for something, or you might just enjoy the fact that it is tidy. Either way, it is better than opening the door and being confronted by the ghost of every garden project you started in May.
