Ten minutes up the A380 and you're out of the one-way system and into a yard where you can park next to your own container.
The closest SOS Storage yard to Torquay is on Old Newton Road, Kingskerswell, TQ12 5LB — about ten minutes from the harbour via the A380. Containers are £96 a month for a 5ft, £125 for a 10ft and £180 for a 20ft, and hardstanding pitches for boats, caravans and motorhomes are £120 a month, all including VAT. The site is gated, floodlit and CCTV-monitored, open 7:30am to 8:30pm every day of the year.
Parking and space are the two things Torquay doesn't have much of. Between the hills, the terraces and the holiday-let turnover, a lot of people simply have nowhere to put things — and nowhere to keep a boat that isn't a mooring fee.
Torquay is built on hills, and it was built for a different century. Terraces stacked up steep streets, grand Victorian houses long since divided into flats, and parking that ranges from difficult to imaginary. Almost none of it has usable storage attached, and what does exist is usually a cellar or a shared space that isn't dry.
Then there's the salt. Anything metal that lives outdoors near the front — trailers, tools, bikes, boat fittings — has a much shorter life in Torquay than it would five miles inland. Moving kit away from the seafront air is one of the cheapest maintenance decisions a boat owner or trades person can make.
The third factor is the season. Torquay's economy swings hard between summer and winter, and a lot of businesses here need somewhere to put things for six months of the year: guest house furniture, café tables and heaters, deckchairs, signage, event equipment. Paying seasonal rent on commercial premises to store that is money burnt; a container is a fraction of it.
A level hardstanding pitch out of the salt air, ten minutes from the marina and the slipways.
Winter furniture, spare beds, seasonal stock and the linen mountain — stored between seasons.
Off-season equipment, patio furniture and stock for cafés, bars and restaurants along the bay.
No garage, no loft, and stairs everywhere. A drive-up container is far less painful than a goods lift.
The pattern here is genuinely seasonal in both directions. October and November bring the hospitality clear-out — outdoor furniture, parasols, seasonal stock and the equipment that won't be needed until Easter — plus boat owners looking to get hulls out of the water and off the salt for winter. Then March and April reverse it, as the same businesses pull everything back out and the boats go back in. Guest houses and holiday lets also come to us mid-season when a refurbishment means a floor's worth of furniture has to go somewhere for a fortnight.

Head out of Torquay on the A380 towards Newton Abbot and turn off at Kingskerswell. Because you're leaving town rather than heading into it, you avoid the seafront traffic entirely — which makes a real difference in August, and a bigger one if you're towing a boat.
